COMPOSITION
Dexavet Injection (Vet) 10 mL: Each mL contains- Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate BP 2 mg.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate, Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs is a powerful anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-allergic drugs. It stabilizes individual cells and their internal structure so that they do not release the substances which initiate or perpetuate the irritation, pain and swelling referred to as inflammation. Dexametha¬sone sodium phosphate inhibits the synthesis of Prostaglandin (PGF2a), Interleukin (IL) and Platelet Activating Factor (PAF) by inhibiting cyclooxygenase & lipoxygenase pathway of inflammatory process.
INDICATIONS
Dexavet (Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate) is highly effective in suppressing or preventing inflammation.
1. Inflammatory Diseases: Mastitis, endometritis, arthritis, laminitis, dermatitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, allergy etc.
2. Metabolic Disease: Ketosis
3. Shock: Being hit by a car, attacked by another animal or usually slip & hypovolemic or surgical shock.
4. Supportive Therapy: Insect bite, snake bite, shipping fever, retention of placenta etc.
5. Induction of Parturition: When exceed the calving date or for abortion.
6. Immunosuppressive: When immune system is destructively hyperactive.
7. Nervous System: Any disorders of nervous system.
8. Blood Calcium Reduction: When blood calcium is dangerously high.
9. Cancer Therapy: Lymphosarcoma and mast cell tumor respond to high dose of glucocorticoids.
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
Injection: For intramuscular or intravenous use only.
Cattle: 2.5-10 mL (5-20 mg), repeat as needed.
Horse: 1.25-2.5 mL (2.5-5 mg), repeat as needed.
Dog/Cat: 0.50 mL (1 mg) daily for 3-5 days.
Calf: 0.5-1.5 mL, repeat as needed.
In case of shock dose should be 5 mg/kg IV.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Do not use in animals hypersensitive to dexamethasone sodium phosphate.
PRECAUTION
Chronic or inappropriate use of corticosteroids including dexamethasone sodium phosphate can cause life-threat¬ening hormonal and metabolic changes. Polyuria, Polydipsia, and Muscle wasting can be seen with prolonged corticosteroid use.
SIDE-EFFECTS
May suppress the immune system. Muscular weakness may occur.
USE IN PREGNANT ANIMAL
Abortion may occur in pregnant animal.
IN CASE OF OFFSPRING & YOUNG ANIMALS
Can be used after one month of age.
DRUG INTERACTION
When diuretics such as furosemide are given with corticosteroids, there is an increased risk of electrolyte imbalances due to calcium and potassium losses. Corticosteroids should not be given intravenously with fluids containing calcium.
OVER DOSAGE
Short-term administration of even large doses is unlikely to cause serious harmful systemic effects due to adrenal suppression. Problems associated with long-term administration of dexamethasone sodium phosphate relate to suppression of normal adrenal function, latrogenic cushing's disease and Metabolic crisis due to abrupt withdrawal.
WITHDRAWAL TIME
Meat: 7 days; Milk: 72 hours.
STORAGE
Store in a cool (below 25°C) & dry place, protected from light. All medicine keep out of reach of children.
